How you can help express the need for the birthing center...

On the right side of the page you will find 3 templates of letters addressed to Dr. Michael Murray.  Feel free to download, print and sign one of these letters that fits you best.  After downloading, you may also edit these templates to better suit your situation if you wish.  A written letter is a very powerful tool in convincing the head of Interior Health that we are in need of a birthing center here in Kamloops!!  Thank you for your support in this matter.

A Birth Center supports optimal health for women and newborns!

  • Birth Centers have a lower rate of interventions such as: forceps extraction, vacuum delivery, and c-sections, as well as lower rates of perineal injury, while having the same rate of perinatal outcomes as hospitals.
  • In keeping healthy women and their babies out of the hospital, a Birth Center would reduce their risk of hospital based infections such as MRSA, influenza outbreaks and other repiratory illnesses.

  • A Birth Center would provide an opportunity for women from remote communities to stay in a safe place from the early stages of labour thus reducing the incidence of a roadside emergency birth and an unattended home birth.

  • A Birth Center gives a labouring woman an opportunity to use drug free methods of pain relief such as water immersion, which reduces the risk of complications and the side effects of pain-killing drugs.

Birth Centers save us money and resources by reducing:
  • rate of expensive interventions
  • use of high risk specialists (OB/GYN's, anesthetists etc.)
  • time spent in the hospital due to early discharge common for midwifery clients
